This is a section of a colorful Precambrian rock material green Mica (muscovite) from Eastern Ontario Area and an excellent example of Grenville metamorphism. The name is derived from the Greek word that means to split.
The Grenville Orogen is a deeply eroded and highly uplifted orogenic belt that extends from Labrador in northeastern Canada to the Adirondack Mountains and southwestward under the coastal plain of the eastern United States. It developed from about 1.5 to 1 billion years ago.
Schist is faliated medium grade metamorphic rock. It formed by metamorphosis of mudstone and shale or some form of igneous rock. It usually has better crystallization of mica minerals. This is called schistosity texture. There are many types of this rock so they may be named for mineral comprising the actual rock for example Mica schist.
