This is a natural "Ball Peen" Mica specimen from Branchville, Connecticut. Instead of forming flat, book-like sheets as muscovite usually does, mica specimens from the Branchville Mica Mine develop a rounded, bulbous termination resembling the rounded end of a ball-peen hammer, from which its name is derived.
The Branchville Mica Mine, which has been inactive since 1944 and is mostly flooded, is one of the most historically important mineral localities in the United States. Opened in the 1870s as a mica mine, it quickly became internationally recognized for its scientific significance after Yale University mineralogists discovered an exceptional variety of rare minerals within its pegmatite. The quarry served as the type locality for several newly identified mineral species and played a key role in advancing the study of pegmatites and mineral formation. It is especially famous for producing the distinctive "ball-peen" muscovite crystals, along with fine specimens of beryl, spodumene, and other rare minerals.
This classic specimen from Connecticut will come protected in a Perky Box. The box will show its age but is just another way to show how old the specimen is. The original label when the specimen was catalogued is also a nice touch.

This is an incredible green/yellow, fluorapatite crystal from Cerro del Mercado (Iron Mountain) in Durango, Mexico. It is completely free of the matrix and has a relatively perfect termination. The catalog number 2246 of this phantom specimen came from the Earl Calvert Collection.
At Cerro de Mercado, numerous veins containing gemmy, lemon-yellow to greenish fluorapatite crystals cut through the hematite massif. These crystals have been collected for decades from the area's iron mines, but they have become much more scarce with recent mechanization of the mining operations.
The bright, lustrous apatite crystals form hexagonal shapes with off-center terminations. They are found in vugs, often associated with quartz and calcite. Most crystals are around an inch in length, though larger crystals up to about 4 inches long have been found.

It is silvery gold with good transparency when held up to the light. The name Muscovite comes from the term Muscovy Glass which was a name for the thick sheets of Mica used as a substitute for glass Russia. The name Mica is derived from the Greek word that means to split.
On this nice specimen, the matrix faces are covered with beautiful golden yellow point stars of muscovite mica, a typical shape for this rare mica formation. The stars are the result of twinning; the points show a bit of wear but this does not detract from the beauty of such a piece.
