One of the most popular minerals, quartz forms hexagonal prisms, terminated by rhombohedra or pyramidal shapes.  Quartz faces are often striated and the crystals twinned and distorted.  The colour is amazingly variable, and quartz may be white, gray, red, purple, pink, yellow, green brown, and black, as well as being colourless.  Quartz is a transparent and translucent mineral and it has a vitreous luster on fresh surfaces.
