Impact Melt Glass | Flädle Glass | 15.76 Grams | Slice | Nördlinger Ries Crater Impactite | Germany SO24

This is an outstanding specimen of Impact Melt Glass or "Flädle" glass coming from the Ries crater near Stuttgart Germany. Although not a meteorite, impactites are directly linked to them and their impacts.

Impactite is a slag-like glassy object found on the surface of the earth, formed from rock melted by the impact of a meteorite. The term encompasses shock-metamorphosed target rocks, melts or suevites and mixtures of the two, as well as sedimentary rocks with significant impact-derived components and shocked mineral grains, tektites, anomalous geochemical signatures, etc.

This impactite was formed 14.5 million years ago when a meteorite crashed into the earth making a ~10 miles wide crater. This piece displays very well with a properly cut face to show the interior. It is amazingly light considering its 15.76 grams and mass of 51.6x25.8x8.4 mm.   It has a unique hollow sound when you tap it.

Would be a beautiful addition to any new or existing collection. Comes with a Canagem Collection specimen card.
