Smithsonite can occur in a variety of colors, including white, grey, blue, green, pink, brown, and yellow. Its coloration is often influenced by impurities present during its formation. The crystals can be transparent to translucent, with a vitreous to pearly luster. It commonly occurs as botryoidal (rounded, globular masses resembling a bunch of grapes) or reniform (kidney-shaped) aggregates. It can also form crusts, stalactites, and stalagmites. Significant deposits of smithsonite have been found in various countries, including the United States, Mexico, Australia, Namibia, Greece, and China.
